Director of Finance & Fundraising

POSITION TITLE:  Director of Finance & Fundraising
REPORTS TO:  President and Board of Directors
POSITION TYPE:  Full-Time, Exempt
SALARY RANGE:    $150,000 – $200,000 DOE
DIRECT REPORTS:  One

GENERAL OVERVIEW:
The Director of Finance and Fundraising is responsible for efficiently managing PharmaIN’s day-to-day financial operations in Bothell, WA.  This position is a key role for a rapidly growing and highly motivated private biotech organization headquartered in Bothell, Washington.  This role will take on both strategic initiatives for finance and fundraising as well as the day-to-day tasks of accounting and administration. The right person will be flexible, diligent and a quick learner who is organized, detail-oriented and able to work independently and prioritize deliverables and be willing to roll up their sleeves.  Overall, this position is responsible for all aspects of the following areas including forecasting, budgeting and financial analysis, federal grant management & compliance, general accounting, GAAP and A133 audits, accounts payable/banking, strategic fundraising and overseeing other accounting activities.     

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Finance & Accounting

  • Manage and complete all routine accounting duties including payables, receivables, month-end close, etc.
  • Ensure that all accounting policies and procedures are followed consistently.
  • Maintain accurate and complete accrual-based financial statements that are in compliance with GAAP.
  • Prepare monthly financial managerial reporting.
  • Manage all aspects of the annual financial statement audit preparation of all audit schedules and responding to audit inquiries.
  • Coordinate the annual federal tax filings (and/or extensions) with the CPA firm.

Financial Analysis & Budgeting

  • Budgeting, forecasting and projections.
  • Develop financial models, as needed, to analyze business activity.
  • Track and report on key performance measures.

Fundraising

  • Partner with CEO to build and implement fundraising strategies.
  • Prepare materials, financial reports and marketing materials for fundraising purposes.
  • Identify potential institutional, commercial and private investors as well as commercial partners to support pipeline of assets.

Federal Grant Management and Compliance

  • Ensure that all required financial reports (e.g. FFRs) are submitted to sponsors on-time and in accordance with the terms and conditions of the awards.
  • Perform the monthly administrative cost allocation, ensuring that grants absorb the proper amounts of allowable costs per their grant agreements.
  • Perform cost reimbursement draws for the grants and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the scientific team for grant compliance. Some examples include: fixed asset purchases, changes in scope, time tracking guidelines/approvals, subrecipient monitoring, etc.
  • Provide the leadership and the principal investigations with monthly grant spending vs. budget reports by grant. Provide guidance regarding audit spending.
  • Manage all aspects of the A-133 audit including preparation of all audit schedules and responding to audit inquiries.
  • Ensure that the A-133 audit is submitted to the NIH before the deadline each year.

 Business Administration

  • Prepare and submit all necessary external filings and government surveys, etc.
  • Assist in managing non-scientific operations of the business.
  • Other tasks as determined by CEO.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or higher – CPA is a plus!
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance
  • Experience across multiple areas, including accounting, management reporting, FP&A, budgeting and forecasting and financial operations.
  • Knowledge of federal grant compliance rules and grant management experience
  • Experience preparing for and managing both Financial and A-133 audits.
  • Ideal candidate will also possess Equity Accounting experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks and Concur.
